United States Removes Restrictions on Syrian Embassy

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced on Monday that the United States has rescinded all previous legal restrictions placed on the Syrian diplomatic mission and embassy in Washington, effectively reinstating Syria’s complete diplomatic presence on American territory.

“We have received an official decision signed by my friend, the US Secretary of State, lifting all legal measures previously imposed on the Syrian mission and the Embassy of the Syrian Republic by the United States of America,” al-Shaibani declared on the X platform, a social media network based in the US.

He further noted that this development represents the reinstatement of “Syria’s ability to freely carry out its diplomatic role in the US, in line with the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s strategic plan.”

This diplomatic breakthrough follows Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s landmark visit to the White House, where he met with President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance.

The visit was notable for being the first by a Syrian leader to the United States in several decades.

Washington’s legal limitations on Syria’s embassy were first enacted in March 2014, when the Obama administration mandated the suspension of both diplomatic and consular activities.

The decision was justified by Syria’s lack of cooperation with US authorities and the intensifying civil conflict ignited by the Assad regime’s violent suppression of demonstrations that erupted in 2011.
