Over one million get evacuated as Typhoon Fung-Wong hit Philippines
Officials from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that one death was due to drowning and another from a structural collapse caused by the storm. Two additional people were injured.
The typhoon caused widespread damage, destroying nearly 100 homes and damaging around 1,000 more. Nearly three million households lost power on Sunday, with 50 transmission lines reported down. Assessment of the full impact is ongoing, according to the National Electrification Administration.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration downgraded Fung-Wong from super typhoon status on Monday. The Malaysian Meteorological Department reported the storm southwest of Vigan City, moving west-northwest at 30 km/h (18 mph) with maximum winds of 120 km/h (75 mph).
Authorities also issued warnings for strong winds, rough seas, heavy rain, and thunderstorms across the South China Sea and parts of Malaysia.
The storm has triggered major emergency measures, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of northern Luzon to typhoon impacts during the Pacific cyclone season.
