Twin Typhoons Claim Many Lives in Philippines
According to Wednesday's statement from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Fung-wong—which struck landfall Sunday as a super typhoon before losing intensity while traversing north-central Luzon—claimed a minimum of 27 lives, leaving two individuals unaccounted for.
A separate NDRRMC briefing revealed that Typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit on Nov. 4, unleashed catastrophic flooding and landslides across the central Philippines, resulting in 232 fatalities, 112 people missing, and over 500 wounded.
The heaviest casualties occurred in Cebu province, an area already devastated by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake on Sept. 30, the agency reported.
Both weather systems forced millions from their residences while obliterating homes, agricultural land, and critical infrastructure—roads and bridges among them—the agency confirmed.
Fung-wong marked the 21st tropical cyclone to strike the Philippines in the current year, exceeding the nation's typical annual count of 20 storms.
