Syrian Leader Denies 9/11 Involvement
Al-Sharaa, who was removed from the US State Department’s ‘global terrorist’ list just last week, attended a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.
Previously, he led the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a regional branch of Al-Qaeda, which orchestrated a coalition of anti-government forces that captured Damascus in December 2024, resulting in the overthrow of Syria’s long-serving president, Bashar Assad.
Speaking to a news agency shortly after his meeting with Trump, al-Sharaa referred to his prior involvement with jihadists as “a matter of the past.”
When questioned about any remorse for Al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks, he rejected any association.
“I was only 19 years old. I was a very young person. I didn’t have any decision-making power at the time. I don’t have anything to do with it. Al-Qaeda was not present right then in my area,” al-Sharaa stated.
He further insisted that he is “the wrong person” to be connected to the plane hijackings that claimed nearly 3,000 American lives on September 11, 2001, an event that subsequently facilitated US military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
