Iraq’s Illiteracy Rate Decreases Following Latest Census
(MENAFN) The Iraqi Ministry of Planning revealed on Tuesday that the country's illiteracy rate has decreased to 15%.
Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi, a spokesperson for the ministry, shared with a news agency that the data from the general population and housing census conducted at the end of 2024 confirmed the 15% illiteracy rate. This is a notable improvement, as the rate was over 20% in 2020.
Al-Hindawi also pointed out that women in Iraq continue to have a higher illiteracy rate compared to men, largely due to social factors and other barriers preventing women from completing their education.
The nationwide population and housing census, which took place from November 20 to 23, 2024, was the first of its kind in Iraq in 27 years.
