Strong 6.3-Magnitude Quake Rattles Southern Philippines

(MENAFN) A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 in magnitude struck off the coast of Davao Occidental in the southern region of the Philippines on Tuesday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The agency reported that the tremor occurred at 6:17 p.m. local time, originating at a depth of 117 kilometers and located roughly 295 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island.

The institute cautioned that the tectonic event is likely to result in aftershocks and potential damage.

Authorities said there have been no major reports of injuries or structural damage so far.

The quake was also felt in General Santos City and in the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat.

The Philippines, an archipelago, regularly experiences earthquakes due to its position along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
