European Space Agency Conducts Project on Lab-Grown Food in Space

(MENAFN) Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steak, mashed potatoes, and desserts cultivated from individual cells in space, provided an experiment launched into orbit today proves successful.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is conducting a project to evaluate the feasibility of growing lab-grown food in the unique environment of low gravity and higher radiation found in orbit and on other planets.

This research aims to discover new methods for reducing the high costs associated with feeding astronauts, which can reach up to EURO20,000 per day.

The team working on this initiative states that the experiment marks the first phase in developing a small pilot food production facility aboard the International Space Station within the next two years.

According to Dr. Aqeel Shamsul, CEO and founder of Frontier Space, based in Bedford, lab-grown food will be crucial if NASA’s goal of transforming humanity into a multi-planetary species is to become a reality.

His company is collaborating with researchers from Imperial College London to develop the concept.

"Our dream is to have factories in orbit and on the Moon," Dr. Shamsul remarked during an interview with the media. "We need to build manufacturing facilities off world if we are to provide the infrastructure to enable humans to live and work in space."
