Unexploded Ordnance in Gaza Costs Child's Sight
The 7-year-old boy was playing outside his damaged home when his curiosity led him to pick up a leftover device, which detonated instantly, causing him to lose his right eye.
Mohamed now faces the risk of losing his left eye as well, unless he can be evacuated for urgent medical treatment outside the war-torn Gaza Strip.
“I was playing with other children when a grenade exploded in my face,” Mohamed shared with the media, his voice trembling with pain.
His father, Khaled Hegazy, quickly rushed him to a local hospital, where Mohamed underwent surgery to remove his right eye. “He was like any child who went out to play outside our destroyed house when we heard an explosion all of a sudden and found him covered in blood,” his father recalled.
“We quickly rushed him to a hospital, but due to a shortage of medicine and equipment, we had to transfer him to another hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove his right eye. His condition remains critical,” Khaled explained further.
The father expressed his despair, stating that his son requires what he referred to as a “medical miracle” to save his remaining eye.
