Israeli Minister Clarifies Goal of Renewed Gaza Attacks
(MENAFN) Israel’s intensified military campaign is directed at the “complete occupation of the Gaza Strip,” according to Culture Minister Miki Zohar, who made the declaration on Monday.
Speaking with a public broadcaster, Zohar—affiliated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party—stated, “Such a move endangers those who remain in captivity,” but emphasized that “there is no choice left,” underscoring what he described as a grim necessity.
Zohar asserted that this ongoing offensive is designed to compel Hamas, the Palestinian organization currently governing Gaza, to release Israeli hostages and eventually abandon the region.
The minister suggested that only a continued and forceful military approach would achieve this outcome.
According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office released Monday, the Israeli Security Cabinet has given unanimous approval to a strategy aimed at escalating its military operations within Gaza, with the intention of taking control over areas within the besieged territory.
Current assessments by Israeli authorities estimate that 59 captives are still held in Gaza, with 24 believed to be alive.
In stark contrast, Palestinian and Israeli human rights groups report that over 9,500 Palestinians are incarcerated in Israeli facilities, often under inhumane conditions, including allegations of torture, lack of food, and denial of medical care.
Since October 2023, Israel's aggressive campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 52,500 Palestinians—predominantly women and children—highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in the territory.
Amid global scrutiny, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
