China Confirms Tariff Talks with U.S. in Switzerland

(MENAFN) China's Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that Chinese and American officials will convene in Switzerland to discuss tariffs. The confirmation follows an earlier statement indicating that Vice Premier He Lifeng, China's top official for economic and trade matters with the U.S., will meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The Foreign Ministry stated that He Lifeng will head the Chinese delegation's trip to Switzerland from Friday to Monday.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian revealed that the meeting was at the request of the United States.

While stating, "China is open to dialogue," Lin Jian also emphasized that "any dialogue must be based on equality, respect and mutual benefit."

The upcoming talks are set against a backdrop of considerable trade friction between the two major economies, sparked by Washington's steep 245% tariffs on goods from China, which then led to Beijing's retaliatory 125% tariffs on all imports from the United States.
