EU Pushes for 2027 End to Russian Fossil Fuel Imports

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU's dedication on Wednesday to completely phase out Russian fossil fuel imports by the close of 2027. This accelerated schedule is a cornerstone of a wider European plan focused on undermining Russia's military strength and bolstering the continent's energy security.

Speaking before the European Parliament in Strasbourg during a session commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, von der Leyen emphasized that revenues from fossil fuels continue to be a "key source of funding" for Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine.

"At the beginning of the war, we spent €12 billion per month on Russian fossil fuels. Today, we’re down to €1.8 billion," she noted, highlighting the progress achieved and the necessity for a final push to end energy dependence on Moscow. Recent data indicates that in 2024, the EU's total spending on Russian fossil fuel imports amounted to €21.9 billion.

"The era of Russian fossil fuels in Europe is coming to an end," she firmly stated.

Von der Leyen elaborated on the steps outlined in the Commission's new roadmap, which includes a prohibition on all new contracts with Russia and a cessation of spot market imports by the end of 2025.

Furthermore, she announced that the EU will also take measures to prohibit remaining imports of both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia by the end of 2027.

Von der Leyen highlighted the EU's success in diversifying its energy sources, pointing to a tenfold decrease in Russian oil imports and a significant drop in gas dependence from 45% to 13%.

The European Commission president also expressed gratitude to international partners, including the U.S., Norway, Japan, and South Korea, for their support in navigating the energy crisis that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
