EU Commission President Pushes for Budget Overhaul Amid Global Instability
"Today, geopolitical tensions rise. Trade rules are being re-written. Extreme weather events are more and more frequent due to climate change. And the change in technologies is faster than ever. The ‘new normal' is anything but normal," von der Leyen said during the Annual EU Budget Conference in Brussels.
She stressed the importance of adapting the budget to be more flexible, agile, and responsive to contemporary challenges. "Today we are working with a budget designed in the years 2019 and 2020. A different world," she remarked.
Von der Leyen further explained that the EU budget is more than just a collection of funds and regulations—it directly impacts citizens' daily lives and livelihoods.
Over the past five years, she noted, the EU has consistently pushed the budget to its limits, holding extensive meetings to address each crisis and find ways to direct resources effectively. She also recalled how emergency funding was allocated during the COVID-19 lockdown to support economic recovery and bolster energy security.
Reiterating the need to focus on the most pressing issues, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of making European funds more accessible. She pointed out that each region faces unique challenges and announced that the new budget will incorporate national and regional partnerships for investment and reform.
"In our next budget, there will be a central place for Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy," she concluded.
