Study Reveals AI Outperforms Humans in Emotional IQ Exams
Researchers from the University of Geneva and the University of Bern administered emotional intelligence evaluations—initially designed to assess humans—to six separate AI systems.
The five-section examination gauged empathy and the capability to detect, navigate, and control emotions. The scenarios featured emotionally intense situations, such as selecting the best response when a colleague’s concept is appropriated at work.
On average, AI platforms produced accurate responses in 82% of cases, while human test subjects achieved a 56% correctness rate.
In the subsequent stage of the research, scientists instructed ChatGPT to devise fresh emotional intelligence assessments.
These AI-created evaluations, reviewed by more than 400 individuals, were rated as equally authentic as those not designed by humans.
“This suggests that these AIs not only understand emotions but also grasp what it means to behave with emotional intelligence,” stated researcher Marcello Mortillaro.
Specialists note the outcomes imply AI, when directed by professionals, could contribute in sectors traditionally viewed as inherently human, such as instruction, mentorship, and dispute mediation.
