Trump Maintains Stance on 50 Percent Terms with EU
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump declared on Friday that he is not seeking a tariff agreement with the European Union, asserting that the terms have already been established. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized his consistent stance that companies building their facilities in the United States would face no tariffs.
He expressed confidence that the European Union is eager to reach an agreement, stating, "Everybody wants to make a deal. I'm sure now the European Union wants to make a deal very badly, but they just, they don't, they don't do it right. They don't know about it, right?"
Beyond the EU, Trump also addressed tariffs on technology companies. He indicated that a 25% tariff, previously mentioned for Apple if its iPhones weren't manufactured in the U.S., would extend to other smartphone producers like Samsung. "It would be more. It would also be Samsung and anybody that makes that product. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair," he explained.
President Trump has consistently urged Apple to relocate its manufacturing from China and India to the United States. Earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the majority of iPhones destined for the U.S. market in the coming months would be produced in India and Vietnam, rather than China, which had been subjected to some of Trump's highest tariffs.
Reiterating his incentive for domestic production, Trump told reporters, "When they build their plant here, there's no tariff, so they're going to be building plants here." He further clarified an earlier discussion with Cook: "But I had an understanding with him that he (Cook) wouldn't be doing this. He said he's going to India to build plants. I said, that's okay to go to India, but you're not going to sell into here without tariffs."
