Malaysia Hosts ASEAN-GCC Summit

(MENAFN) The second summit between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) took place on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

The gathering marked another milestone in fostering regional relations and cooperation between the two organizations.

In his opening statement, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim "expressed appreciation for the presence of all leaders, a strong signal of their shared resolve to strengthen ASEAN-GCC cooperation and to explore broader, forward-looking partnerships for the benefit of their peoples," as shared in a post on his official Facebook page.

His remarks underscored the unity and shared vision among participating nations.

According to Premier Anwar, the GCC was ASEAN’s seventh most significant commercial ally in the previous year, with trade volumes reaching USD130.7 billion.

He highlighted that “investment flows are rising, underscoring growing confidence in the long-term potential of our partnership,” emphasizing the increasing trust and engagement between the two regions.

Anwar also pointed out that the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation for 2024–2028, which was agreed upon during the initial summit held in Riyadh in 2023, "serves as our strategic roadmap to advance collaboration across political and security, economic and socio-cultural pillars." This framework provides a clear direction for deepening ties in various key areas.

The summit in Kuala Lumpur, hosted by Malaysia in its current role as chair of ASEAN, followed the regional bloc's two-day internal conference in the same city.

This back-to-back scheduling further reflected the region’s commitment to multilateral dialogue and partnership-building.
