Trump Considers Tougher Sanctions on Russia
The root of the conflict lies in Moscow’s relentless offensive in Ukraine and the stagnant progress in achieving a peaceful resolution.
According to a report by a news agency, the Trump administration is assessing various strategies this week aimed at compelling Putin to make compromises.
Although new economic penalties are unlikely, officials are evaluating alternative steps to increase pressure.
Among the possibilities being considered is support for a proposed 30-day cease-fire, endorsed by Ukraine—a plan that Russia has consistently dismissed.
This effort signals a strategic pivot by the administration, which is eager to apply leverage short of direct financial sanctions.
Despite the deliberations, the news agency indicated that Trump may ultimately choose not to implement any additional sanctions. On Sunday, Trump confirmed that such measures are under active review.
“He’s killing a lot of people,” Trump said of Putin. “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him?”
Insiders close to the administration noted that Trump is becoming increasingly disillusioned with the faltering diplomatic efforts and may choose to abandon talks if a final attempt to reach a deal fails.
This stance marks a significant departure from his earlier campaign promise to swiftly resolve the war.
“President Trump has been clear he wants to see a negotiated peace deal,” stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to the news agency. “President Trump has also smartly kept all options on the table.”
Trump adopted an unusually stern tone during his comments on Sunday, remarking, “I’ve known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people and I don’t like it at all.”
