Media Reveals Possible US Military Withdrawal in Europe

(MENAFN) The United States is anticipated to declare a decrease in its military forces stationed in Europe in the “coming months,” according to a German newspaper, which cited “high-ranking European diplomats.”

While the extent of the reduction remains uncertain, NATO is reportedly gearing up for the potential changes, as noted by the publication.

This possible withdrawal might be connected to the forthcoming US national defense strategy, EU officials told the paper.

The new strategy document is expected to be finalized by the end of summer.

Washington needs to redirect its focus toward countering China, as it currently lacks readiness for a possible confrontation with Beijing, stated US Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby in an interview with the newspaper.

Speculation about a US troop reduction has been present in the media since a news agency disclosed in April that the US was contemplating pulling back as many as 10,000 soldiers from Eastern Europe.

Later, United States Leader Donald Trump acknowledged he was considering a partial withdrawal but did not specify the scale or timing of the move.

In mid-May, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker announced that Washington intends to initiate discussions about a potential troop drawdown with other NATO allies after the alliance’s summit in June.

“We are not going to have any more patience for foot dragging in this situation,” he remarked at the time, while also admitting that “nothing has been determined” yet.
