Lavrov Accuses Europeans of Reviving Nazi Ambitions
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has charged certain European politicians with resurrecting ambitions reminiscent of the Nazi era by endorsing attempts to deliver a strategic defeat to Moscow.
His comments came in response to statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
On Monday, Merz proclaimed that there are “no more range limitations” on weapons supplied by the West to Ukraine, including those from Germany.
Furthermore, Merz pledged to transform the German armed forces into the most powerful conventional military force in Europe.
Lavrov criticized Europe sharply, saying, “Europe has once again found itself a Nazi flag by committing to a completely misguided, disastrous venture of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.”
He expressed dismay at Merz’s declaration, noting that “To hear from the current German leader that Germany will regain its position as the leading military power in Europe, just after we have celebrated the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Hitler’s Nazism, is quite symptomatic.”
He added that history apparently failed to teach these leaders any lessons.
Merz’s statements about expanding the range of weapons raised concerns even among his own coalition partners.
German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil told reporters soon after Merz’s comments that no new agreements had been made concerning the range of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory beyond the arrangements established by the previous government.
Lavrov described Merz’s position as “confused and uninformed,” suggesting it “reflects the level of competence of modern European leaders.”
