Russia has strongly criticized the United States’ proposed global missile defense initiative, known as the “Golden Dome,” warning that it poses a serious threat to international security. The Golden Dome, endorsed by US President Donald Trump, aims to establish a multi-layered missile defense system capable of intercepting long-range threats. The ambitious plan includes space-based interceptors and preemptive strike capabilities, with a projected cost of over $542 billion over 20 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
During a Tuesday press briefing, Zakharova emphasized that both Russia and China view the project as a direct threat to the global balance of power. Responding to a question from Chinese media, she highlighted a joint statement issued by Moscow and Beijing on May 8, which criticized the US for ignoring the critical balance between offensive and defensive strategic weapons. The statement also condemned Washington’s framing of space as a “warfighting domain,” accusing the US of escalating the militarization of outer space.
Zakharova urged the United States to reconsider its course and support a Russian-proposed treaty banning the deployment of weapons in space, which she said would help prevent a new arms race beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
North Korea echoed these concerns earlier the same day, warning that countries feeling threatened by the Golden Dome would likely expand their military capabilities in response.
The controversy draws parallels to the US withdrawal from a 1972 anti-ballistic missile treaty with Russia in 2002 under President George W. Bush. That decision prompted Russia to develop advanced nuclear weapons designed to bypass missile defenses. President Vladimir Putin has previously argued that while the US missile shield is costly for taxpayers, it does little to enhance real security.
