Russian news agency shows iconic Soviet war movie in Mauritius
The screening attracted a diverse audience, including foreign diplomats, local organization leaders, and Mauritian citizens. Originally released in 1957 and directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, the film is regarded as a Soviet cinematic masterpiece. It won the Palme d’Or at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival and is celebrated for its emotional portrayal of how war affects everyday lives. The film addresses themes of love, sacrifice, integrity, and redemption, offering a human perspective on wartime experience that diverged from conventional war narratives.
Mauritian attendees expressed deep appreciation for the film. One viewer commented on its powerful depiction of the contrast between love and war, calling the experience “simply fantastic.” Another shared that the film was so moving, it nearly brought them to tears.
Kevin Gutty, head of the Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC), praised the event as a significant cultural milestone, highlighting the film's artistic depth and outstanding performances.
This screening is part of RT’s wider campaign across the Global South, which has already brought the film to audiences in India, China, Indonesia, Lebanon, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, South Africa, and Tanzania.
RT says the “Common Victory” project aims to build international solidarity around the remembrance of shared sacrifice during WWII. The campaign emphasizes that “Russia remembers and will always honor the contributions of all nations who fought a common enemy.”
