US senator snarky skepticism on Greta mission
Recently, a coalition advocating for the delivery of humanitarian aid announced that a yacht carrying a dozen individuals, including Thunberg, had departed from Sicily for Gaza with a “symbolic” cargo. The cargo aimed to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis.
In a pointed comment, the senator, known for his strong support of Israel and close ties to the US administration, wrote, "Hope Greta and her friends can swim!” The remark seemed to suggest a risk of the vessel being attacked or sunk.
This mission follows a previous flotilla attempt that was halted after one of the boats was struck by drones in international waters near Malta. The coalition accused Israel of responsibility for the assault, although no official response was given.
Before embarking, Thunberg emphasized the peril involved, stating, “no matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the lives being genocized [sic],” highlighting the urgent humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
Israel has strongly rejected allegations of genocide, attributing the hardships endured by Palestinians primarily to Hamas’s refusal to disarm. The Israeli government defends the naval blockade, maintained since 2007, as necessary to block arms shipments to militant groups in Gaza.
Reports from the United Nations indicate that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with roughly 20% of the population at risk of starvation amid a recent escalation in military actions initiated by Israel in March.
