Afghanistan faces 6.3 magnitude earthquake, killing eight people
Qari Lutfallah Habibi, head of public health in Samangan province, confirmed the casualties and warned that the figures could increase as more information emerges. Rescue operations are currently underway to assist victims and locate those trapped under debris.
The tremor also led to significant material damage, according to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.
Reports indicate that the quake occurred around 1 a.m. local time (2030 GMT Sunday) at a depth of roughly 28 kilometers (17.4 miles), near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of Afghanistan’s largest urban centers.
