CIA Chief Rushes to Rebuild Strained EU Relations

(MENAFN) CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted high-stakes meetings with European Union leadership last week in a diplomatic push to repair deteriorating transatlantic intelligence partnerships, media reported Friday, drawing on accounts from three sources with direct knowledge.

Ratcliffe held discussions with the EU's chief foreign policy representative, Kaja Kallas, alongside senior personnel from the EU Intelligence and Situation Center (INTCEN) and the EU Military Staff Intelligence Directorate (EUMS), according to the report. The director's mission centered on reassuring Brussels of America's dedication to continued intelligence cooperation and signaling that the CIA "wants to keep lines open," media stated.

CIA spokesperson Liz Lyons confirmed to the publication that Ratcliffe addressed "evolving threats" from Russia and China. "Any reporting that suggests concerns were raised that the US is not a reliable partner are false and disconnected from reality," she said.

Media indicated that confidence among certain allied nations eroded following US President Donald Trump's temporary halt of intelligence distribution to Ukraine last March, coupled with his installation of "loyalists" into critical national security roles. Democratic lawmakers have characterized Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's selection to lead intelligence operations, as a "Russia asset," allegations she has rejected.

In October, CIA-affiliated technology powerhouse Palantir condemned Britain's proposal for mandatory digital identification cards, with the firm's UK director, Louis Mosley, describing the initiative as "very controversial."

Meanwhile, US-headquartered encrypted communication platform Signal has warned of a potential EU market exit should the union advance its Chat Control legislation. Ratcliffe has endorsed Signal for government communications, noting that the majority of CIA personnel utilize the messaging application.
