IAEA Chief Says Trump’s Nuclear Test Plan Manifests "Profound Unease"

(MENAFN) The International Atomic Energy Agency's top official has issued a stark warning that President Donald Trump's move to restart American nuclear weapons testing signals escalating worldwide instability and threatens the fragile architecture of international security.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi delivered his assessment during a Tuesday interview with a French channel, characterizing Trump's announcement as a "manifestation of profound unease, tension, and increasing fragmentation." He warned the decision erodes both worldwide stability and the framework designed to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation.

The controversy erupted after Trump directed the US Department of War to initiate nuclear test preparations last week, asserting America stands as "the only country that doesn't test" while leveling accusations that Russia and China secretly detonate nuclear devices. Moscow and Beijing have categorically denied these charges.

Grossi challenged the factual basis of Trump's assertions, pointing out that the international surveillance network created through the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty would immediately identify any nuclear explosions worldwide. The IAEA leader stressed that the monitoring organization "can immediately record such phenomena."

Amid mounting geopolitical friction, Grossi urged the United Nations to reassert its authority in preserving international stability and protecting the nuclear non-proliferation framework.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has declined to respond directly to Trump's remarks, stating Moscow awaits "clarifications from the American side." He reaffirmed that neither Russia nor China has restarted nuclear testing programs and both nations honor their Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty commitments.

Trump's declaration followed Russia's recent weapons trials, including deployment tests of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and Poseidon underwater drone. Critically, these exercises contained no actual nuclear explosions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated Moscow would only contemplate resuming nuclear weapons testing if other nuclear-armed states formally break the current testing moratorium.
