African Union Refutes Trump’s Genocide Claims in Nigeria
Addressing a United Nations gathering in New York, Youssouf emphasized that such depictions oversimplify and distort a much more intricate security challenge.
During his remarks on Thursday, delivered alongside UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Youssouf reaffirmed that the African Union had already made its standpoint explicit and appealed for prudence in the use of terminology when describing ongoing conflicts throughout Africa.
“There is no genocide in northern Nigeria,” Youssouf declared. “We have issued a communique making clear that what's going on in the northern part of Nigeria has nothing to do with the kind of atrocities we see in Sudan or in some part of eastern DRC.”
He further explained that the violent extremism plaguing Nigeria’s northern region—mainly fueled by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)—has harmed individuals of both Muslim and Christian faiths.
“I think the complexity of the situation in northern Nigeria should push us to think twice before declaring or making such statements,” Youssouf continued.
“The first victims of Boko Haram are Muslims, not Christians, the first victims, and I’m saying it with documented references.”
Youssouf also warned that oversimplified interpretations risk misrepresenting the deeper causes of unrest, which include terrorism, displacement, and local struggles over territory and natural assets.
