China Urges End to “Maritime Issue” Provocations

(MENAFN) China on Thursday dismissed the accusations made by the foreign ministers of the G7 nations, urging the group to “stop stirring up disputes, heightening tensions, and undermining regional peace under the pretext of maritime issues.”

According to a state-operated publication, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told journalists in Beijing that “the situation in the East China Sea and South China Sea remains generally stable.”

Lin emphasized that the G7’s remarks about China “once again ignored facts, distorted right and wrong, and deliberately smeared China while grossly interfering in China's internal affairs.”

He further stated, “China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes it.”

The senior diplomats of the G7 nations had, on Wednesday, voiced their apprehension regarding China’s expanding military capabilities and a “rapid increase” in its nuclear stockpile.

Representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the United States, and the European Union called upon Beijing to “demonstrate its commitment to stability through improved transparency,” as mentioned in a collective declaration following their assembly in Ontario, Canada.

The statement further noted, “We reaffirmed the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law,” adding that the ministers conveyed “strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in particular by force or coercion, including in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.”
