European leaders hail progress made by Trump to secure peace in Ukraine

(MENAFN) European leaders expressed support on Monday for what they described as “significant progress” in peace efforts led by US President Donald Trump aimed at achieving “a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” according to reports.

The joint statement, released in Berlin and signed by figures including Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted “close work between Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s and President Trump’s teams as well as European teams over the recent days and weeks.”

The statement emphasized that the leaders had committed to collaborating with Trump and Zelenskyy “to get to a lasting peace which preserves Ukrainian sovereignty and European security,” noting “strong convergence between the United States, Ukraine and Europe.”

They stressed that “ensuring the security, sovereignty, and prosperity of Ukraine was integral for wider Euro-Atlantic security” and asserted that Ukraine deserves “a prosperous, independent, and sovereign future, free from fear of future Russian aggression.”

As part of a potential peace agreement, the statement outlined plans for the US and Europe to provide “robust security guarantees and economic recovery support measures.” These include continued efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces, which “should remain at a peacetime level of 800,000,” and the establishment of a “European-led ‘multinational force Ukraine’” operating under the Coalition of the Willing with US support.

The proposed plan also calls for a US-led “ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism with international participation” and a legally binding commitment to respond to any future armed attack, potentially with “armed force, intelligence and logistical assistance.”

The leaders further pledged to invest in Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic recovery, noting that “Russian sovereign assets in the European Union have been immobilized,” and reaffirmed their support, stating they “strongly support Ukraine’s accession to the EU.”
