Czech President Taps Fresh Cabinet Under PM Andrej Babis
The appointment signals Babis' comeback to national leadership as head of the ANO party, having previously held the premiership between 2017 and 2021.
Babis took the oath of office as prime minister on Dec. 9, vowing to make the Czech Republic "the best place on our planet."
The newly formed administration comprises 16 members total—the prime minister plus 15 ministers drawn from Babis' ANO party, the Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD), and Motorists for Themselves. Together, the coalition commands 108 seats within the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies, securing a parliamentary majority.
Coalition power-sharing arrangements allocate eight ministerial portfolios to the ANO party, encompassing critical positions like finance minister and interior minister alongside the premiership. The Motorists party controls four ministries, notably including the foreign ministry, while the SPD administers three ministries, among them the defense ministry.
Four ministers will simultaneously function as deputy prime ministers: Karel Havlicek and Alena Schillerova representing ANO, Petr Macinka from the Motorists party, and Jaromir Zuna, the SPD nominee.
