UN Calls for Probe After Deadly Explosion at Afghan Treatment Facility
“Last night’s tragic blast … must be investigated promptly, independently and transparently, and those responsible held to account in line with international standards,” spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan tells reporters in Geneva.
He adds, “Those results must be made public,” stressing that victims and their families deserve reparations.
Witnesses report “a scene of total destruction at the hospital site,” with hundreds searching for missing relatives in Kabul, according to the UN office.
Al-Kheetan emphasizes that international humanitarian law provides strict protection for civilians and civilian objects, noting that medical facilities receive special safeguards.
The explosion occurs amid rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan asserts that it conducted precise overnight airstrikes targeting Afghan military sites in Kabul and eastern Nangarhar province, rejecting Afghan claims that the rehabilitation center was struck.
According to Al-Kheetan, 289 Afghan civilians—including 104 children and 59 women—have been killed or injured, while tens of thousands have been displaced.
