Majority of Germans Express Dissatisfaction with Government Performance
The poll found that 79% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the governing coalition made up of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), its Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). This marks a significant increase compared with 55% in an earlier survey conducted in June 2025.
The shift in public opinion is especially notable among supporters of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU, where satisfaction levels have reportedly declined sharply. While 48% of CDU voters expressed approval in March, that figure fell to 34% in April.
The data also suggests changes in Germany’s political landscape. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has emerged as the strongest party in current polling, reaching 27% support, an increase of one percentage point.
Meanwhile, the governing CDU/CSU bloc has dropped by three points to 23%, its lowest level in YouGov polling since December 2021.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) now stands at 13%, down one point, while opposition parties have seen slight gains. The Greens rose to 14% and The Left increased to 10%, each gaining one percentage point.
