Virginia Voters Back New Congressional Map in Midterm Shift

(MENAFN) Voters in Virginia have approved a new congressional redistricting plan that could strengthen Democratic prospects in the upcoming US midterm elections in November, according to results reported by news agencies.

The constitutional amendment allows the state to bypass its bipartisan redistricting commission and instead adopt newly drawn district boundaries created by Virginia’s Democratic-controlled General Assembly. The changes could result in up to four additional seats favoring Democrats in the US House of Representatives.

The decision comes amid an intensifying nationwide redistricting push during the middle of the decade, initiated after President Donald Trump urged Republican-led states to redraw electoral maps in order to improve the party’s chances in the midterms and preserve its majority in Congress.

Several Republican-controlled states have already acted on that call. Texas was the first to approve new district maps through its legislature, potentially adding five Republican-leaning seats without requiring voter approval. Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio have also adopted new boundaries that together could yield four additional Republican seats.

In response, Democratic-led states have moved to counter those changes. California voters recently approved new congressional maps that could create up to five additional Democratic-leaning districts. That measure was backed by the state’s Democratic leadership before being put to a public vote.

The developments reflect an escalating partisan struggle over congressional boundaries that could significantly influence control of the US House in the next election cycle.
