Canadian PM Warns Overreliance on US Has Become Economic Weakness
According to trade data cited from Scotiabank, the US currently accounts for roughly 72% of Canada’s exports, making it by far its largest trading partner. However, Carney noted that relations between Ottawa and Washington have become increasingly strained since Donald Trump returned to office, citing tariff measures and repeated political rhetoric directed at Canada.
In response, the Canadian leadership has emphasized that the country’s sovereignty will not be compromised, with Carney reiterating that Canada will remain fully independent and not subordinate to the United States.
In a public address, he said that long-standing economic strengths tied to close US relations have now turned into structural weaknesses that must be addressed. He added that shifting geopolitical conditions mean past assumptions about stable US-Canada relations may no longer hold.
Carney also stressed the need for Canada to diversify its trade partnerships and expand access to new international markets in order to reduce reliance on a single economic partner.
He pointed to historical examples of Canada navigating external pressures, referencing past conflicts involving the United States, as part of his broader argument for resilience and strategic autonomy.
Separately, he highlighted recent diplomatic engagement with China as part of efforts to improve trade ties beyond North America, including preliminary agreements aimed at easing certain trade restrictions and exploring broader economic cooperation.
